After, the Wattpad sensation with over a billion reads, is now one of the most-talked about movies of 2019!

Anna Todd wasn’t expecting universal stardom when she joined Wattpad as a 24-year-old mom and military wife. Like many others, she stumbled onto the platform seeking fan-scribed, imagined stories about her favorite boy band. The internet was, in some ways, a simpler place in 2013. While recent history has painted the online space as divisive and hostile ground, there was once a time when seemingly everyone could agree on a single, guiding truth, a north star: One Direction.

“I found Wattpad through reading Fanfiction and from the second I laid my eyes on the platform, I fell down the rabbit hole,” Anna says. Once Anna Todd had devoured all the Harry Styles fanfiction the world had to offer, she took a deep breath and, while standing in the checkout line at Target, tapped out what would become the first chapter of her first story on Wattpad.

Typing and uploading one chapter at a time, Anna wrote After in her free moments on her phone. What she found through the process was a community like no other.

“[Wattpad] was a place I couldn’t have even dreamed existed with people just like me, an entire world of people who read and write on the internet. I found a community, a home really,” says Anna.

The After movie has been in the works for nearly 4 years, and in 2018, Anna was finally given an After movie release date. The film hits the big screen in April 2019. Anna Todd, alongside Aviron Films and Wattpad Studios, has stayed close to the project as a producer. Directed by Jenny Gage and executive produced by Adam Shankman (A Walk to Remember, 17 Again), the film stars Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, Josephine Langford, Samuel Larson, Shane Paul McGhie, Selma Blair, Pia Mia and Inanna Sarkis.

In the months that followed her first chapters came a wave of attention for the story. It went viral. But not in the fleeting way a cute cat gif or clever tweet goes viral—After logged its first million readers when it was only half finished.

In 2014, Wattpad Studios (a division of the company that works with Hollywood studios and large publishers to transform Wattpad hits into movies, books and TV shows) worked with Anna to land a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster. By the time the first book hit shelves, After had logged a billion reads worldwide. It’s since gone on to rank on the New York Times best-seller list and be translated and published in 35 languages.
