Like many others, Anna Todd stumbled onto the platform seeking fan-scribed, imagined stories about her favorite fandoms.  “I found Wattpad through reading fanfiction and from the second I laid my eyes on the platform, I fell down the rabbit hole,” Anna says. Once Anna had devoured countless stories, she took a deep breath and, while standing in the checkout line at Target, tapped out what would become the first chapter of her first story on Wattpad.

Typing and uploading one chapter at a time, Anna wrote After in her free moments on her phone. What she found through the process was a community like no other.

“[Wattpad] was a place I couldn’t have even dreamed existed with people just like me, an entire world of people who read and write on the internet. I found a community, a home really,” says Anna.

In the months that followed her first chapters came a wave of attention for the story. It went viral. But not in the fleeting way a cute cat gif or clever tweet goes viral— After logged its first million readers when it was only half-finished.

In 2014, Wattpad Studios (a division of the company that works with Hollywood studios and large publishers to transform Wattpad hits into movies, books, and TV shows) worked with Anna to land a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster. By the time the first book hit shelves, After had logged a billion reads worldwide and went on to become a New York Times bestseller and be translated into 35 languages.

Since the release of After, Todd has gone on to write eight additional novels and served as producer and screenwriter on the film adaptations of After and After We Collided. After won a People’s Choice Award for Best Drama Film, three Teen Choice Awards, and was one of the top-grossing indie films of the year (after opening #1 in 17 markets). The sequel, After We Collided, was an indie hit when it landed in theaters in the fall of 2020.
